An abstract watercolor painting

I started out thinking that I was working on an under painting for an ink sketch. As the painting developed my plan changed. Sometimes you think you are moving in one direction and then you end up in a different place altogether.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’œ

Peace and Joy abstract watercolor painting

I used a large round brush (#12) for this painting and a few of my favorite colors. ๐Ÿ’™

After loading the brush with paint, I started dragging it down the page in random places using the side of the brush (not the tip). I really like the texture this created. Allowing some white of the paper to remain was very important. I continued this way alternating between purple and blue paint.ย

Near the end, I decided the piece needed something more.ย  Ok I thought…maybe a little more color. I selected yellow ochre and was pleased that the addition provided some needed warmth and balance.

This painting was full of fun and experimentation. Although it’s not my usual style,ย  I really enjoyed the process and results. I may try a few more like this in the future.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Christmas Card Collage

I decided to switch things up and try something new. I recently enrolled in a Skillshare class on Collage Art, Collage & Go.ย  For the class project,ย  I thought it would be fun to use some Christmas cards and scrapbook paper that I had on hand.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’š

Christmas card collage start

I cut out some circle shapes and then cut the circles in half.

After arranging the half circles in rows,ย  I simply glued them down using a glue stick.

Wishing you Peace

After adding a few more small pieces,ย  it was time for a little detail. I cut out the word Peace for the top and added a few ink doodles.

I had a lot of fun putting this collage together and just love all of the little birds. When I finished I noticed the words on the page, Wishing you Peace.ย  I just love that!

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

After playing and doodling some fun shapes, I added watercolor.

A little blue and purple combined with playful brushstrokes made some fun snowflake shapes.ย  ๐Ÿ’™โ„๏ธ

This page in my sketchbook just makes me smile.

‘Tis the Season

It’s that time of year and I’ve been having fun decorating and painting holiday pines.

Happy Thursday, friends!ย  โค๏ธ

pine branch watercolor painting

I painted this pine branch using a flat 1/2″ brush. For the background I used the wet on wet technique. I dropped in blues and greens (similar to the branch) on to wet areas of the paper. I love the interesting patterns that this technique creates.

This little guy just makes me smile with his cozy hat and scarf.ย ๐Ÿ˜€

Wishing you a wonderful holiday and a very happy new year.

I will be taking a little blogging break until after the new year.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Looking back at a Buck Silhouette

A few years ago I painted a buck silhouette. I love this simple painting and thought it would be fun to share it again.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’œ

Buck silhouette watercolor

I sketched the buck first and then dropped in different colors filling in most of the space. I allowed the colors to mix and mingle and didn’t fuss with it. I tapped on my brush toย  created a little fun spatter.

While the painting was still damp (not too wet/ not too dry), I sprinkled on some salt. As I recall, I used kosher salt which is flaky and creates these nice large blooms.

After it completely dried, I brushed off the salt to find a beautiful pattern.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Watercolor landscape squares

I had fun playing and painting watercolor landscape squares this week.

I was inspired by the beautiful work and creativity of fellow blogger and friend Jill Kuhn. I love her November Square-A-Day landscapes and decided to try a few squares.

You can check out Jill’s post here, November Square-A-Day Landscapes

Happy Thursday, friends! ๐Ÿ’™

watercolor landscapes in progress

I started by taping off a few sections in my watercolor sketchbook.

My plan was to keep it simple and limit each square to a just a few colors.

Daniel Smith watercolors used:ย  Sap Green, Pthalo Blue, and Carbazole Violet
Brush used: Round #12

This was a fun way to play and work on ideas for future paintings. Although a large part of this exercise was about trying different color combinations, I was reminded how important it is to leave some unpainted areas. Leaving a little white of the paper adds interest and also a little sparkle.

I hope you are inspired to create art and have fun.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent! ๐Ÿ˜Š
