Backyard Bluebird

This little bluebird stopped by for a visit recently. Luckily I had my new camera in hand when this little guy arrived. I did my best to contain my excitement long enough to snap a few pics of him. 🙂

I thought it would be fun to try painting my bluebird. I started with a light pencil sketch first, and then moved on to the eye and beak making sure to get the placement and details correct.

While working on the feathers, I like to dampen a small area of the paper with a little clean water. Then I drop in a little paint and let the colors move and mingle. A gentle touch with a small brush seems to work well for painting the feathers on a small bird like this one.

I decided to try something a little different for the background and create a frame of color around my bird. It has taken a lot of painting for me to get comfortable trying different backgrounds. There are still times when I have to push worry out of the way and just go for it.

Tip – how to flatten your watercolor painting if the paper curls up or has buckled
After you have finished your painting and it is completely dry, you can flatten it by lightly wetting the back side of the paper with clean water and then setting a heavy book or two on top of it until it dries completely.

Leu Gardens Visit

I recently visited Leu Gardens in Orlando, Florida while on vacation. It was really nice to spend a quiet afternoon in the garden enjoying nature and taking a few photos along the way. I have a few favorites to share with you today. 🙂

So many flowers on the property to enjoy and lots of inspiration for future paintings.

The lavender caught my eye in the herb garden. ❤

I love how the afternoon sun is shining through the cute little picket fence.

Ahh, and another lavender photo but this one is a soft and romantic.

I didn’t note the name of these gorgeous plants but I was lost in the beauty of the day strolling around and having fun with my best friend.

The extraordinary colors, shapes, and textures blew me away…

I am thrilled with how these photos turned out.

Calm and Peaceful

Sharing a few calm and peaceful images with you today.

Lavender calm -painted in my 8×10 Pentalic Watercolor Sketchbook

This painting was inspired by an exercise in the lovely Jean Haines’ book, Paint yourself calm. I love the simplicity of this painting.

Jean notes that it is important to enjoy the painting experience and not worry about the outcome. When I am able to let go and do that, it really feels good. 🙂

A favorite photo at Clearwater beach, Florida. After an evening walk at the beach, I was treated with a beautiful pastel sunset. A nice way to end a fun weekend getaway.

A Big Hello from Huey

In honor of the Chinese New Year – Year of the Dog, I thought it was a good time to introduce my Black Lab, Huey Lewis.

Huey is a happy boy, always ready to play and have fun. He loves the usual games like catch, fetch, and keep away with Mom’s socks. It’s pretty cute when he wants to play and will try to get my attention by dropping his toy on my lap or my desk. If he still doesn’t get my attention, he will pick it up and toss it to me. 🙂

His other true love is swimming. When we are at the lake it is hard to keep him out of the water. The lake is his happy place (and mine too). 🙂

He is alway on patrol keeping an eye on the yard and everything going on in the neighborhood. Last year I painted this picture of him sitting on the couch looking outside. He takes this job very seriously.
