Shades of blue

Blue Blue Feather — Blue feather watercolor – 6×9 inch Bee paper

A wet on wet watercolor painting…
Just a simple feather out of my imagination with lots of yummy blues. 🙂

At one point I really thought this painting was not going to work out but I kept on going. On the last wash I threw caution to the wind and really punched up the blue color. After it dried I was so happy that I did not fuss with it, that is usually where things go wrong for me.

This pair of Mallard ducks out for an evening swim just stole my heart.
The blue reflection from the paddle boat on shore was stunning.

Sunset views like this just take my breath away.
I couldn’t stay for long enjoying this view. The mosquitoes were out in force and tried to take my phone away and push me in the lake. 😉

The clouds reflecting on the lake were pretty amazing too. ❤

I am so blessed to be able to get away and enjoy this view at the lake from time to time.

Backyard Nuthatch

A frequent visitor to my backyard is the sweet Nuthatch. This cute little bird is always fun to watch balancing on the feeder or creeping around on a tree trunk in search of food.

This guy was pretty vocal. I just love this pic. ❤

White-breasted Nuthatch — Nuthatch watercolor

I decided to combine both of my photos for this painting and tried to capture the cute expression of the sweet Nuthatch in the first photo.

I started off with a light pencil sketch and then added a little detail with a black Micron pen. I continued with watercolor building up color and adding definition to my bird and branch. At this point, I was quite happy and thought I was finished.

but …

Later I took a few photos of my painting and it became quite clear that it really needed more color. I decided to go for it and really punch up the blues.

Ahh.. that’s better. 🙂 That color boost really made a difference.

Simple Watercolor Landscapes

I’ve been working on a few simple landscape paintings. I used similar color combinations for my distant trees in each painting and have 3 very different results to share with you today. Oh, and lots of blue. 🙂

My first step on any landscape painting is thinking about where I want the horizon to be. Once I decide how much space I want to reserve for the sky, I lightly draw a line for the horizon using a pencil and ruler. With the horizon line in place, it is easier for me to visualize the big shapes in the painting.

Using the wet on wet technique, I tried to indicate some distant trees. When the wet paint hits the damp paper, it creates color blooms on the paper. It is so much fun to watch this happen!

I tried to keep things simple and not overwork my landscape paintings. I had to remind myself before starting each one, no fussing allowed. Hopefully that will get easier with more practice.

Indigo worked well in this painting. I am very pleased with the addition of the foreground here, it seemed to balance things out. Although I like the other paintings below, this one is probably my favorite because I’m pulled in and feel something.

I really like the varied tree shapes in this one. The bits of white paper beneath the trees in the center area worked well. I need to remember that for future landscape paintings.

This abstract landscape is very different from my usual style of painting. I love the blooms of color in this painting. ❤ The granulating effect of the French Ultramarine Blue is quite interesting.

Blue Jay on a branch

I worked on sketching and painting a Blue Jay this week. My painting was inspired by a beautiful photo on pexels.com (a favorite online site that has free stock photos for artists to use).

After a light sketch in pencil, I used black Micron pens to complete the sketch. I love Micron pens, the ink is waterproof and fade proof, just perfect for using with watercolor.

Watercolor Tip: Gently erase any remaining pencil lines before painting. Leftover pencil markings will be impossible to remove once they’ve been painted over. If you forget to remove them, it is no big deal. I’ve done that many times. 🙂

Adding watercolor is the fun part and it brings the birdie to life. I added a little extra splash here and there to make the painting more lively and to hopefully create more interest.

Watercolor tip: To create a bit of splash, I loaded the brush with color and then tapped on the handle directly over my paper. I repeated the splash using a few different size brushes and colors. Splashing and spattering can be a bit messy, I like to cover my work area with paper towels to catch any overspray.
