In my sketchbook today

I have another round of sketching to share with you today. Can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on.

Hope you have a wonderful day friends! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’™

Pretty Posies ink sketch

I’m sure it’s no surprise to find there are flowers in my sketchbook. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pretty posies this time. I used purple and blue micron pens to create a playful pattern.

I like to pull out my sketchbook in the evening. Sometimes I start with plan and other times I just start with a doodle and go from there. This time a few pretty posies happened and I just continued on.

Doodles and flowers sketch

A lively botanical sketch. I just love how this one turned out.

My process is to start with one flower and then I just keep filling in with more flowers, leaves, and buds. I try to balance out the piece as I go. I stay away from too many details because I like this simple floral style.

In my sketchbook I don’t worry about making mistakes. It’s a place to try out different shapes and combinations. I can just let go with my pen and my imagination. Over time with lots of practice I’ve built up muscle memory and sketching confidence.

Dahlia Punch ink sketch

Another quick evening floral. I like adding a few patterns here and there for more fun.

Sketching ink pines

I decided to try sketching pines in a different style. I need to work on this style more but it was fun to watch the branches come to life when adding some shading and darker values.

I hope you enjoy seeing my work and following along. Sometimes I have a hard time finding my voice and putting together a post. I’m not a writer, I’m just an artist sharing what I love. I hope that you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Ink sketching makes it all better

Today I have some colorful leaves to share with you. This piece hit a little bump in the road during the first layer of painting. As the title suggests, ink sketching makes it all better… well, this time it did. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Happy Thursday, friends!ย ๐Ÿงก

watercolor leaves - base painting

I mixed different shades of red, orange, and pink. The painting was all pretty basic with some leaf shapes and stems.

The last touch was to add something in the upper right corner to balance things out.

watercolor leaves - showing an issue

Asย  I painted away I realized… uh oh, I just painted the leaves in the wrong direction. My plan was to paint a few more leaves in the right direction with a little darker color to see if that would fix it.

More paint wasn’t the solution I decided. I planned on adding ink sketching anyway and just hoped for the best. Now I had to wait for the painting to dry.

watercolor and ink - fall leaves sketch

To keep things more interesting I used different shapes and sizes for the leaves. I let the watercolor act as a guide and let the sketching bring things into focus.

My previous painting issue was saved by the ink sketching. I outlined a stem with leaves in the right direction and the other leaves just became part of the background.

I was able to make a save here and just go with it. There are always choices to make with every painting. My best advice is to just keep practicing and having fun.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Simple Watercolor and Ink florals

I have a few watercolor and ink florals to share with you today. I hope these joyful pages from my sketchbook bring you a smile.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’š

Little fall floral watercolor and ink

A little floral sketch with the addition of some warm colors for this one.

Simple Floral watercolor and ink

I love to paint first and then add a little sketching on top for detail and definition. Since this process requires waiting for the painting to dry before sketching, I usually have multiple projects going at the same time. ๐Ÿ™‚

bird and flowers watercolor and ink sketch

This last piece was a card that I made a while back with a little bird and flowers…a few things that bring me joy.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and sprinkle kindness everywhere!

Floral Swirls watercolor and ink

I have a layered watercolor and ink painting to share today.

Happy Sunday, Happy Easter! ๐Ÿ’š

first layer watercolor circles

For the first layer, I started by painting a number of circles in different colors.

The pastel colors kind of remind me of Easter eggs. ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฃ

2nd layer watercolor under painting

The second layer is where it starts to get a little wild with the addition ofย  watercolor swirls and stripes. I decided to experiment a little more with this piece.

At this point it looks like a floral is starting to emerge.

Continuing with the floral theme, the final layer is a fun botanical sketch. I’m often surprised how fast the sketching layer goes. I believe this 11 x 15 inch sketch took about 30 to 45 minutes. As long as I don’t overthink things and just go with the flow, it usually comes together rather quickly.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!
