Floral Swirls watercolor and ink

I have a layered watercolor and ink painting to share today.

Happy Sunday, Happy Easter! 💚

For the first layer, I started by painting a number of circles in different colors.

The pastel colors kind of remind me of Easter eggs. 🐰🐣

 

The second layer is where it starts to get a little wild with the addition of  watercolor swirls and stripes. I decided to experiment a little more with this piece.

At this point it looks like a floral is starting to emerge.

 

Continuing with the floral theme, the final layer is a fun botanical sketch. I’m often surprised how fast the sketching layer goes. I believe this 11 x 15 inch sketch took about 30 to 45 minutes. As long as I don’t overthink things and just go with the flow, it usually comes together rather quickly.

Purple Posies – Watercolor Floral Sketch

I have some happy flowers to share with you. Hope they brighten your day.

I painted a simple floral base a few months ago.

I wanted to add some sketching but wasn’t ready.

It sat on my table for a few months. Life happens and so it waited for time and inspiration.  (sorry about the poor quality photos)…

 

Purple Posies – 11 x 15 inch

I finally pulled it back out last week and decided to jump in.

Using a Uniball 05 pen I tried to keep the sketching simple and fun.

A few notes on my process

Flowers – I give each flower a quick thought before sketching its final shape as I work my way around the painting. No overthinking, just keeping the flow going making decisions on the fly.

Leaves – Some leaves are defined, some hidden (tucked behind other elements), and others are added. Variety, size, and shape are always on my mind when I’m adding leaves and vines. They help fill in empty space and add balance where needed.

Play – Enjoy the process and have fun. There are no rules and no mistakes. We learn and grow from each piece.

Playing in my sketchbook

I was busy this week playing in my sketchbook. I enjoy sketching and it has always helped take my mind off things. I’m very thankful for my sketchbook and art supplies.

When sketching florals, I like to start with bigger flowers first and then fill in around them. A quick sketch here just playing with different size flowers and leaves.

 

I made a grid on my page and then created a bunch of mini sketches.

Some squares are very simple while others are more involved. I think I will try this with a different theme next time, I really like how it turned out. 😀

 

An ink sketch with the addition of some color in this one.

I used mini pastel Tombow markers to brighten things up in my underwater sketch. I just love these fun colors.

 

Back to some leaves and vines which always make me happy. Using my Tombow markers again I added some colorful patterns to the leaves.

Thursday – a little ink sketching

I’ve been trying to spend more time playing in my sketchbook. Sometimes I start with a plan and other times I just go where the pen takes me. 😀

Happy Thursday, friends! 💚

With this sketch I started with a few big flowers and then added some vines. I’m a big fan of peek a boo leaves and had to include a few of them as well.

I haven’t used cross hatching very much and decided to add a little in the center. I like how it pushed the flowers forward and made them pop.

 

More play with leaves this time using a sepia micron pen. I just love that warm color.

When I’m sketching with ink the best rule for me is to not stress over mistakes and not “fix” mistakes. Trying to fix mistakes only seems to make them stand out more. I seem to do a better job if I try to make deliberate stokes and then just go with the flow.

 

Layered circles with doodle patterns. Just having fun and not overthinking things.

Playing and experimenting is really what my sketchbook is all about.

Finishing up with ink detail

I picked up an old painting recently and decided to add some ink detail.

Happy Thursday, friends! 🧡

I liked the nice shape and playful flowers but wasn’t sure how to finish it.

Recently I pulled it back out and decided to add some ink sketching.

I used micron pens in dark purple and burnt orange for my wreath. I’m glad I used those colors, it worked well.

As I added more detail and new elements, the wreath started to fill out and take shape. I just love those peekaboo flowers and leaves. When I finished I was pretty excited, it turned out better than expected. Yay!

Holiday botanical painting

I have a little holiday watercolor and ink sketch to share today.

Happy Thursday, friends! 💚

 

I started out playing with a simple watercolor border of branches, twigs, and berries.

Then I decided it would be fun to add a little ink sketching on top.

 

I outlined some leaves in ink and added a few more twigs and bits to fill things in.

The ink seems to pull it all together. I always enjoy the final sketching phase and try to play and have fun. I just have to be mindful of when to stop. That’s always the hardest part.  😁

 

Just one last thing, adding a holiday message… Ok, much better now. 🎄

Inktober sketching this week

A sweet little mushroom sketch.  I can imagine a little tea party happening here. ☕️🐭

 

I always love sketching birds. For this little cutie,  I tried to limit the lines and make them more deliberate. On the piece of wood, though, I used more lines. I like that contrast in this sketch.

 

A little ornament sketch. I really like how clean and simple this is. Something about it just makes me smile. I think I will use it for one of my Christmas cards this year. 🎄

Sunflowers and Inktober

I have sunflowers and ink sketches to share with you today.

A joyful flower…I just love that sunny smile.

 

A little watercolor practice this week. I’ve been sketching a lot for #Inktober but did find some time to splash around some paint.

I painted my sunflowers in multiple layers building up the color and detail. It always feels good to practice and play.

 

Some simple wildflowers sketched for #Inktober2019.

I started in the middle and worked my way out adding flowers and leaves. The vase was added at the very end. I really like how my wildflower bouquet turned out.

 

A fun little botanical border in my small sketchbook. I always love drawing leaves and flowers and playing with different designs.
