Floating away with blue and green

Just like that and I’m back to painting leaves.

Floating and flowing blues and greens, calm and soothing. 😊

Hope your day is wonderful, friends! 🌿💙

watercolor leaves under painting

I started painting using my favorite blues and greens. My plan was floating leaves and vines.

Funny thing happened though, as I was painting I realized that I had the direction of the leaves all wrong. I decided to continue on anyway and just go with it.

Hmm, what to do…

After it dried, I flipped my sketchbook around to see if that would help.

It looked promising so I continued on. Using a #micronpen size 005, I added simple shapes and lines and then it all started to come together.

I’m glad I didn’t give up on this one.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Water Lily practice continues on…

I’ve tried many times to paint water lilies on the pond. I alway find painting them to be very challenging. Today I have a few practice pieces to share with you.

Happy Sunday, friends! 💜

water lily watercolor painting

A very loose attempt with this one. It has a nice softness and calm feeling.

It could probably benefit from another dark wash around the base of each flower.

Having had a few unsuccessful water lily paintings behind me, I decided to move on and leave this one as is. 😉

water lily watercolor painting

A bolder attempt this time. It took a number of washes with various dark colors to achieve this result. It feels like water to me and that my flowers are floating on top. Yay! 😊

I will continue to practice and keep on trying to paint water lilies. I hope you are inspired to play, create art, and have fun.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Lavender in the garden

I planted some lavender in the garden this week. Oh my, the scent was just divine. Today I have a lavender inspired painting to share with you.

Happy Thursday, friends! 💜

lavender watercolor painting first round

For this painting I used my travel watercolors. Things were looking pretty good but I realized it needed more color after looking at the photo above.

It’s important to know when to stop painting but also when it’s time to go back in.

I bumped up the purple and greens and darkened the colors a little.

Ahh, yes much better. 😀

Additional leaves were also added with my liner brush. Some brush strokes were made by dragging the side of the brush across the paper.  Others were made with a light touch moving the tip of the brush on the page. It’s a simple thing but it really adds movement and some nice variation.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

The sketching goes on…

It’s time for another little peek into my sketchbook. Hope you enjoy. 😀

All of the sketches I’m sharing today were done in ink with no pencil first. This way when a mistake happens I have to ride with it, there’s no going back, only forward.

Happy Thursday, friends!  💚

Poppies ink sketch

A quick sketch of poppies. Trying to keep the petals delicate by not overworking with too many lines.

bloom and shine ink sketch

In this sketch I was just playing with ideas and different shapes. I tried to keep it fun and didn’t worry about adding detail. I think allowing things to just flow onto the paper without overthinking is a good way to explore ideas and find your creative voice.

This sketch didn’t get much love on Instagram and that’s ok. To me it’s playful and just makes me happy. After I was finished sketching this one, it lifted my mood the entire evening. I call that a big win. 😊

floral ink sketch at the beginning

I started this sketch and got a little bored with it. I think I may go back to it and doodle the leaves or something, that might be fun. I can see that it will need some white gel pen highlights in the center of each flower. Hopefully I can save them.

garden flowers ink sketch

A bigger drawing this time trying to include more floral shapes and include flowers from different angles.

I have a great book by Peggy Dean that I highly recommend for learning how to draw flowers and leaves,  Botanical Line Drawing. This book has 200 simple step by step examples of how to draw flowers, leaves, cacti, succulents, and many things found in nature. It is awesome!!  🌿🌷 💗

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

In the Pink watercolor and ink

I have a fun little watercolor and ink to share today.

Happy Thursday, friends! 🌸

watercolor floral underpainting

A quick watercolor under painting with simple loose shapes.

I love the little hint of blue and the various leaves and stems layered throughout.

Using a micron pen, I added some happy floral sketching on top.

I love how a little bit of ink can take the painting to another level. Sometimes adding the ink works out well and sometimes it doesn’t. I just try to remember that if it flops, I can always paint something else and try again.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following me on this creative journey.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Blooming love – line and wash

I have a little floral happiness to share with you today. It starts with a watercolor painting and ends with ink sketching.

I hope your day is happy and bright!  💚

Blooming love watercolor under painting

I started out with a loose floral underpainting.  This watercolor has been sitting on my desk waiting for the right inspiration.

There are times when I will jump right in and start sketching after the watercolor has dried and then there are times like this…  I needed some time to think and make a few decisions.

Then about a month later I was ready and added the ink sketching below.

“I must have flowers, always, and always.”  ~ Claude Monet

This time I decided to add some sketching and a few light doodles. Nothing over the top but enough to enhance and add some detail to the piece. I love how the ink wakes everything up.

This is one of my favorite ways to create art. I may consider creating a collection of these to offer for sale in the near future. I have gifted a few pieces of my art but haven’t tried to sell anything yet. Hopefully I will be ready to give that a go sometime soon.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Thank you for following along and sharing this journey with me.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!
