Chickadee family watercolor

I’ve been working on a chickadee painting the last few weeks. I thought it would be fun to show you how it came together.

Happy Sunday, friends! πŸ’š

I sketched out the birds and branch first.

adding color to the the chickadees

Then I started by painting the chickadee family.

For the darkest color I mixed up Daniel Smith Paynes Gray + Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Sienna Light (going heavy on the Paynes Gray). It took a few washes of paint to build up the dark areas on the head and neck. It’s really important to get that detail right.

adding watercolor background

Next up was the background. I thought about it for a while and decided to go with some loose flowers and leaves. It was a nice base but needed much more color.

Trying to be fearless, I jumped back in with more paint to boost the background color. I just love how that wakes thing up.

close up of the little ones

I will finish with a close up view of these cute little guys. I just love how they turned out.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Keep playing and having fun. 😊

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Sketching and painting birds

I’ve been wanting to learn more about painting with gouache. After watching a Skillshare class by Kate Cooke, I was inspired to paint this little bird.

I decided to practice a little watercolor version first. Once I get better acquainted with gouache I’ll be sure to share my adventures with you.

Happy Sunday, friends! πŸ’š

I just love how this little guy turned out. Oh those sweet little legs.

Which then inspired more birds…so here we go!

A few quick sketches working on shapes and not worrying about detail.

It’s always good to warm up and play. I really need to do more of this. Just fill the page and have fun.

Tip: A little planning and sketching before any paint hits the paper is really important. By sketching first I can make sure the shapes are as desired and that all elements fit nicely on the page.

This little guy was painted in a separate sketchbook to get ready for my larger painting above. I mixed up a variety of neutral colors and tested them out on my paper.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Art is for everyone. Just play and have fun…be good to yourself.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Chickadee painting

This little guy is on his way to a new home.
I recently painted a chickadee for a friend retiring and moving to Maine.

painted on 7 x 10 inch Canson Mix Media paper

The black-capped chickadee is the state bird of Maine and the white pine is the state tree. I thought a painting of both would make a nice gift. πŸ™‚

and I’m so happy… he really liked it and said that he was planning on hanging it in his new home. yay!

I hope you are inspired to create art and do something you love. Thank you for stopping by and following along.Β  Until next time, have a great weekend.

Happy Painting!

Chickadee and Flowers

I love to sketch and paint birds and today I have another to share with you. A little Chickadee surrounded by flowers.

I just fell in love. πŸ™‚

This little birdie was the pick me up that I needed a few weeks ago. ❀

After a few paintings didn’t work out very well, I needed to get back to something I really enjoy painting. It’s good to know where to turn and what makes you feel good.

I decided to follow my heart and that made me very happy.

Watercolor tips:

  • give some thought to your color palette and background before you begin
  • allow some areas of paint to bleed into one another and let the watercolor magic happen
  • don’t put pressure on yourself, stay positive and enjoy the process

I hope you are inspired to create art and do something you love.
Thanks for stopping by and following along. Until next time, have a great week and enjoy yourself. πŸ™‚

Happy Painting!
