A few favorites this year

I have a little round up of a few favorites to share with you. I’ve been playing with different styles and different media this year and thought it would be fun to take a look back.

Happy Sunday, friends! 💚

Tufted Titmouse bird Procreate digital art

This digital painting started with a pencil sketch of a bird that I imported into the Procreate app on my iPad. In Procreate, I darkened the sketch and had fun painting it. I love how the cool background and softness made this painting feel a bit dreamy.

ink sketch - doodl swirls

I’ve been enjoying doodling and playing with #zentangle patterns more and more this year. This swirly doodle feels like it is bursting with joy from the center and that makes me happy. 😀

Coffee painted roses

Painting with coffee was something new for me and I had a lot of fun with it. I love how these coffee roses turned out and oh that smell….delightful! ☕️

floral pink watercolor and ink painting

This year I’ve been playing with doodle sketching on top of watercolor. I’ve always loved this combination and really enjoy experimenting and creating this way. The watercolor under painting acts as a guide and inspiration for the final sketching on top.

A few tips:
– too much sketching on top can compete with the background and get very busy

– selective doodles add fun and can guide the viewers eye around the painting

– leaving some white areas unpainted is important, it adds balance and some highlights

Soft leaves and vines in watercolor

This is such a simple painting in terms of subject and technique but it makes me happy. Sometimes less is best. 🌿

I’m glad that I’ve been trying new things and exploring different techniques. It keeps me moving forward and excited about the next project. I think I’ve made some good progress this year, that feels really good.

Hope you enjoyed this little look back and are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Tufted Titmouse digital art

I sketched a cute little Tufted Titmouse recently and decided to enhance it in Procreate.

Happy Thursday, friends!   💚

tufted titmouse pencil sketch

This little guy is a frequent visitors at my backyard feeder.

Tufted Titmouse enhanced Procreate

I used the Procreate water brush and technical pencil for this digital piece.

The background color was added using the abstract pattern, Opticon. I used various colors and brush sizes to create this cool pattern. I love how dreamy it looks.

Tip: To connect my bird with the background, I allowed the abstract pattern to overlap the bird in a few places.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following along.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Waterlily digital paintings

I have a few digital waterlily paintings to share with you today.

Happy Thursday, friends! 😊

I  thought it would be fun to add color to a pencil sketch that I shared a few weeks ago.

waterlily pencil sketch

I imported my waterlily into Procreate and then played around and added some color.

pink waterlily digital painting

I painted a version with a pink flower

and another with a white one.

It was fun to create different versions using the same initial sketch. I still love the black and white sketch but the pink version makes me happy too.

Thank you for stopping by and following me on this creative journey.

Cheerful yellow

I hope these happy yellow flowers brighten your day.

Happy Sunday, friends! 😊

I had a plan to paint some yellow flowers this week. I thought a simple sketch would be a good first step.

floral sketch

With the sketch by my side I jumped in and painted the two biggest flowers first. I started by wetting the paper where I planned to position the top section of each flower.

While the paper was damp, I dropped in lots of color in different areas and watched the blossoms come alive. I used a few different shades of yellow and green in this painting and I think that made it more interesting.

sunny flowers watercolor painting

I love the loose results with this one and decided to stop at this point. Sometimes it’s good to step back and not push things.

I wasn’t sure about a background and thought it might be fun to see what I could come up with in Procreate.

watercolor flowers -digital background

I imported my painting into Procreate and played around with layers. I dotted the background with the cool spray paint effect. It took a few tries before I found the right size and placement of the spray that I liked.

While writing this post, I noticed that the pretty light blue spray added some movement to the piece.  Oh, what a nice bonus!

I hope you are inspired to create art and do what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following me on this creative journey.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Birdie Enhanced

I recently posted a few digital sketches that I made using Procreate. Sharon Mann at Make Art…Magic Happens, mentioned that she likes to import her artwork into Procreate and enhance it with cool effects. I knew I just had to give that a try.  I’m always inspired by Sharon’s beautiful and creative artwork. 💗

Happy Thursday, friends! 😊

I decided that a recent sketch of my birdie in a teacup would be fun to play with.

My original ink sketch before importing it into Procreate.

and then after a few enhancements…

New tail feathers and a sweet little hair accessory added.

Lots of happy color and a fun background added as well.

Wow, what a difference that makes!

Thank you for the inspiration and encouragement, Sharon!  I’m having so much fun learning and playing with Procreate.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following me on this creative journey.  Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Sunday – Digital sketchbook

I’ve been having fun playing with Procreate on my iPad. I am so impressed with this app and all of the possibilities. I’ve been watching online videos trying to learn how to create digital art. I have a few pieces to share with you today.

Happy Sunday, friends! 😊Winter pine - digital art

A quick tree that I sketched without using my new apple pencil.

purple posies - digital art

For this floral sketch, I used layers to build up the sketch. It was fun playing with a bright color palette. With time I hope to do a better job layering and blending.

kingfisher digital art

Kingfisher on a branch. I’m starting to get a feel for how much pressure to use with the pencil to achieve the line thickness I desire.

It will be so easy now to create art while I am traveling. Hopefully Procreate will help me improve my sketching skills this year as well. One thing is for sure, I am having a blast playing with Procreate!

I hope you are inspired to create art and do what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following me on the creative journey.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!
