Sunday sketchbook

I thought it would be fun to take you on a walk through my sketchbook today.

Happy Sunday! πŸ’š

My sketchbook is filled with a lot of quick sketches. As you will see, I don’t spend much time on detail or shading. Below are a few of my recent favorites.

garden sketch with butterfly

I like to play with shapes and work on different ideas.

My sketchbook is all about playing and having fun.

simple sketchbook flowers

I do most of my sketching with a pen and that means no erasing. 😊

I think sketching that way builds muscle memory and confidence.

floral bouquet sketch

Sometimes a little floral sketch will inspire a painting.

undersea ink sketching

I like to use a variety of micron pens in different sizes and colors. A colorful sketch like this one makes me smile. It’s fun to play with color and try out different combinations.

sketchbook undersea play

I love to doodle and sketch underwater life. My hope is that these little sketches will lead to more ideas and bigger projects.

I hope you enjoyed this quick stroll through my sketchbook. Until next time, keep playing and having fun.

In my sketchbook today

I have another round of sketching to share with you today. Can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on.

Hope you have a wonderful day friends! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’™

Pretty Posies ink sketch

I’m sure it’s no surprise to find there are flowers in my sketchbook. πŸ˜‰

Pretty posies this time. I used purple and blue micron pens to create a playful pattern.

I like to pull out my sketchbook in the evening. Sometimes I start with plan and other times I just start with a doodle and go from there. This time a few pretty posies happened and I just continued on.

Doodles and flowers sketch

A lively botanical sketch. I just love how this one turned out.

My process is to start with one flower and then I just keep filling in with more flowers, leaves, and buds. I try to balance out the piece as I go. I stay away from too many details because I like this simple floral style.

In my sketchbook I don’t worry about making mistakes. It’s a place to try out different shapes and combinations. I can just let go with my pen and my imagination. Over time with lots of practice I’ve built up muscle memory and sketching confidence.

Dahlia Punch ink sketch

Another quick evening floral. I like adding a few patterns here and there for more fun.

Sketching ink pines

I decided to try sketching pines in a different style. I need to work on this style more but it was fun to watch the branches come to life when adding some shading and darker values.

I hope you enjoy seeing my work and following along. Sometimes I have a hard time finding my voice and putting together a post. I’m not a writer, I’m just an artist sharing what I love. I hope that you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Closing out Inktober fun

I have a few more sketches to share as we close out #Inktober2020.

Hope you have a wonderful day friends! πŸ’š

Simple leaves with fun patterns

Inspired by all of the falling leaves, I worked on some simple leaf shapes filled with fun #doodle patterns.

Inked vase sketch

A pretty vase with some happy flowers. 🌸

Ink Doodle sketching patterns

I played a bit more with patterns on this piece. This time using purple and blue micron pens. I think these colors really add to the fun here.

I always love how this type of sketch ends up surprising me. I wasn’t sure about a few of the patterns but kept going forward and ended up really liking the results.

Sweet girls ink sketch

Oh these girls just make me smile. I love to play in my sketchbook with these sweet characters.

Floral sketch on dark paper

I have a small pad of 6 x 6 inch black mixed media paper. Using my silver uniball signo pen, I sketched out a quick little floral. I just love the contrast and how the design seems to jump off the page.

Although my sketches are quite simple, I’m always learning and exploring new ideas. I really think that daily sketching even just 10 to 15 minutes a day leads to more growth and creativity.

I hope you enjoyed this little walk through my sketchbook.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Flowering tree with ink doodles

I just love a flowering tree and today I have one to share with you. 🌼🌸

Happy Sunday, friends! πŸ’š

It started with the simple idea of painting a tree… and so out came the watercolors.

watercolor tree under painting

A playful tree full of swirls became my under painting. I decided on a rainbow of colors for this one.

When I finished I set the painting aside for a while. I like to think about the sketching a little before diving in. That happens quite often.Β  πŸ˜‰

flowering tree watercolor and ink doodles

I started playing with different flower doodles and added with some leaves. I really like the contrast of the loud flowers on top with the quiet playful flowers falling to the ground.

Although this piece is really all about the flowers, I love the color and texture of the tree trunk.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Pink and Gray Floral Doodle

I have a happy pink and gray doodle sketch to share today.

Happy Sunday, friends! 🌸

Pink and Gray watercolor under paintingΒ

I started out with a soft watercolor under painting. Multiple layers of pink and gray creating a little floral pattern.

I set my painting aside and thought about it a while. Before adding ink sketching I like to wait until I have a general plan and some quiet time.

About a week later I pulled out my pens and had some fun.

Pink and Gray floral doodles

7 x 10 inch Pink and Gray Floral Swirls

I like how the swirls were easily transformed into roses with some curved lines. The playful leaves really worked out well and kind of guide your eyes upward. πŸ˜€

Β It always feels good when things come together at the end. I love how the ink sketching wakes up the painting and brings on the happy. πŸ’—

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Doodle sketching fun this week

I took a break from my usual sketching to try something a little different… And oh what fun I had!

Happy Sunday, friends!Β  πŸ’š

ink sketching practice - faces and hats

I started out trying to sketch some simple faces. Then I thought it would be fun to add a hat. After that I just had to try a pretty dress….

sweet girl wearing a fancy doodle dress

A sweet girl wearing a fancy party dress this time.

sweet girl wearing hat sketch

This time I added a fun hat and left her hair down. Just a sweet doodle sketch that makes me happy.

Even though #Inktober2019 has come to end I plan on continuing to sketch in my free time. Sketching has been a little difficult for me lately as I have been dealing with some back pain but hopefully that will clear up soon.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Looking back at a summer bouquet

I have a watercolor and ink floral to share today. Another painting that I set aside waiting for the right time to add a final layer of ink.

Happy Sunday, friends! πŸ’š

summer watercolor under painting

A soft watercolor with happy colors sets the stage.

Big loose shapes painted on Arches hot press watercolor paper.

summer bouquet watercolor and ink

Hot press watercolor paper is smooth and has a nice surface for ink sketching. This paper works really well for this style of art.

I like the addition of ink for a little detail and unexpected doodles. The doodles are fun and just make me happy.πŸ˜€Β There’s always a little risk when adding ink sketching on top but as long as I don’t overthink things or add too much ink, it usually works out well.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Owl doodle ink sketch

I have a little owl to share with you today.Β  Hope this silly guy leaves you smiling.

Happy Sunday, friends! πŸ’—

Silly owl zentangle sketch part 1

I thought it would be a hoot to work on a little owl doodle.Β πŸ˜‰

A simple owl sketch starts things off and then the fun begins…adding different #zentangle patterns all over.

Silly owl zentangle sketch - part 2

A little more completed here and this fella looks like he is wearing his fancy clothes.

Silly owl zentangle sketch - final

Darkening the eyes made a difference (always important when painting as well).Β  The addition of a fun pattern on his head worked well. I like how that turned out.

IΒ finished this piece a few months ago and set it aside. Recently I pulled it back out and with a fresh eyes decided that this guy needed to make an appearance on my blog.Β πŸ’šπŸ¦‰

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Coffee Floral painting

A little coffee floral to share with you today.

Hope your day is wonderful, friends! πŸ’š β˜•οΈ

Coffee floral under painting

I used my large round (#14) and small liner brush(#2) for this coffee under painting. I am able to get a lot of variety with these two brushes and I love this combination.

Coffee takes a while to dry, especially the dark thicker areas. I recommend letting the painting dry overnight.

Coffee Floral painting with ink detail

11x 15 inch Coffee Floral

I decided to add some fun with a little doodle sketching like I’ve done in previous watercolor florals. For this painting I used both Micron and Uni-ball deluxe pens.

I’m having more and more fun experimenting and creating coffee art. πŸ˜β˜•οΈ

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent.

A few favorites this year

I have a little round up of a few favorites to share with you. I’ve been playing with different styles and different media this year and thought it would be fun to take a look back.

Happy Sunday, friends!Β πŸ’š

Tufted Titmouse bird Procreate digital art

This digital painting started with a pencil sketch of a bird that I imported into the Procreate app on my iPad. In Procreate, I darkened the sketch and had fun painting it. I love how the cool background and softness made this painting feel a bit dreamy.

ink sketch - doodl swirls

I’ve been enjoying doodling and playing with #zentangle patterns more and more this year. This swirly doodle feels like it is bursting with joy from the center and that makes me happy. πŸ˜€

Coffee painted roses

Painting with coffee was something new for me and I had a lot of fun with it. I love how these coffee roses turned out and oh that smell….delightful! β˜•οΈ

floral pink watercolor and ink painting

This year I’ve been playing with doodle sketching on top of watercolor. I’ve always loved this combination and really enjoy experimenting and creating this way. The watercolor under painting acts as a guide and inspiration for the final sketching on top.

A few tips:
– too much sketching on top can compete with the background and get very busy

– selective doodles add fun and can guide the viewers eye around the painting

– leaving some white areas unpainted is important, it adds balance and some highlights

Soft leaves and vines in watercolor

This is such a simple painting in terms of subject and technique but it makes me happy. Sometimes less is best. 🌿

I’m glad that I’ve been trying new things and exploring different techniques. It keeps me moving forward and excited about the next project. I think I’ve made some good progress this year, that feels really good.

Hope you enjoyed this little look back and are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!
