Spring flowers and birds

I have a few recent paintings to share today inspired by nature’s beautiful gifts.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’š

Watercolor floral with my favorite soft spring colors.

Flowers and birds always make me happy.ย  I hope they brighten your day as well.

I will probably cut back to one blog post a week for a while. I need to slow down a little but I will continue to paint and sketch. You can find me (and hopefully follow me) on Instagram at pattyanneart.

Until next time, take care and be well!

Purple Posies – Watercolor Floral Sketch

I have some happy flowers to share with you. Hope they brighten your day.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’œ

I painted a simple floral base a few months ago.

watercolor floral under painting

I wanted to add some sketching but wasn’t ready.

It sat on my table for a few months. Life happens and so it waited for time and inspiration.ย  (sorry about the poor quality photos)…

Purple Posies – 11 x 15 inch

I finally pulled it back out last week and decided to jump in.

Using a Uniball 05 pen I tried to keep the sketching simple and fun.

A few notes on my process

Flowers – I give each flower a quick thought before sketching its final shape as I work my way around the painting. No overthinking, just keeping the flow going making decisions on the fly.

Leaves – Some leaves are defined, some hidden (tucked behind other elements), and others are added. Variety, size, and shape are always on my mind when I’m adding leaves and vines. They help fill in empty space and add balance where needed.

Play – Enjoy the process and have fun. There are no rules and no mistakes. We learn and grow from each piece.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Playing in my sketchbook

I was busy this week playing in my sketchbook. I enjoy sketching and it has always helped take my mind off things. I’m very thankful for my sketchbook and art supplies.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’š

Floral ink sketch

When sketching florals, I like to start with bigger flowers first and then fill in around them. A quick sketch here just playing with different size flowers and leaves.

Mini nature ink sketches

I made a grid on my page and then created a bunch of mini sketches.

Some squares are very simple while others are more involved. I think I will try this with a different theme next time, I really like how it turned out. ๐Ÿ˜€

Sea life ink and Marker sketch

An ink sketch with the addition of some color in this one.

I used mini pastel Tombow markers to brighten things up in my underwater sketch. I just love these fun colors.

leaves and vines pattern

Back to some leaves and vines which always make me happy. Using my Tombow markers again I added some colorful patterns to the leaves.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Take care and be well, my friends.

Thursday – a little ink sketching

I’ve been trying to spend more time playing in my sketchbook. Sometimes I start with a plan and other times I just go where the pen takes me. ๐Ÿ˜€

Happy Thursday, friends! ๐Ÿ’š

pretty floral with cross hatching

With this sketch I started with a few big flowers and then added some vines. I’m a big fan of peek a boo leaves and had to include a few of them as well.

I haven’t used cross hatching very much and decided to add a little in the center. I like how it pushed the flowers forward and made them pop.

leaves and patterns ink sketchj

More play with leaves this time using a sepia micron pen. I just love that warm color.

When I’m sketching with ink the best rule for me is to not stress over mistakes and not “fix” mistakes. Trying to fix mistakes only seems to make them stand out more. I seem to do a better job if I try to make deliberate stokes and then just go with the flow.

round patterns ink sketch

Layered circles with doodle patterns. Just having fun and not overthinking things.

Playing and experimenting is really what my sketchbook is all about.

garden ink sketch

One last page of garden inspired doodles for today.

I hope you enjoyed this little walk through my sketchbook.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Be gentle with yourself

Be gentle with yourself, you’re doing the best you can.

I love this quote and need to do just that.

Happy Thursday, friends! ๐Ÿ’—

Teapot ink Doodle

I was looking back at my earlier work and found this little teapot doodle.

I’m not sure why I didn’t share it earlier, it’s pretty cute. ๐Ÿ˜

daisy ink doodle

A simple little daisy doodle using a sepia micron pen. I love that warm sepia color.

Just a short post today, it’s been a busy week. I will be taking a little blogging break. I seem to need to catch my breath every few months.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Collage floral bouquet

I put together a floral collage recently and am very excited to share it with you today.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’—๐ŸŒบ

collage flowers - cut out shapes

After a Skillshare class by Claire Picard,

Art Collage – Create a Beautiful Paper Rose Bouquet,

I couldn’t wait to get started on my project.

I had some pretty pink scrapbook paper that I used to cut out shapes for my roses. I started by playing around with flower shapes to see what I liked. Then I got pretty excited, I can do this!

A light gray scrapbook paper was a nice contract to the pink flowers so I used that for the background.

Collage floral planning

The leaf shapes that I cut out:

Dark brown leaves – from a Christmas card
Bigger white leaves – from one of my ink sketches
Small light brown leaves – from a paper lunch bag

Once I had a nice design arranged, I took a picture of it so that I could refer back to it as I worked to glue things in place.

One lesson learned is that I will need a different type of glue next time around. Claire used PVA glue. She painted it on each piece and glued things down with ease.

I used a glue stick and it was quite a challenge. I’m not a fan of sticky fingers. ๐Ÿ˜ So that will part of my process will need to change.

Collage floral glued down

I glued down the flowers first and then worked my way out to the leaves.

Next a little ink detail pulled the piece together.

Collage floral art

The final touch was using a white pen for additional bouquet filler.

It was so much fun putting this piece together and I love how it turned out. I am excited about the many ways in which I can combine watercolor painting and ink sketching in another creative way.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

A special watercolor wreath

I’ve been working on a wedding invitation for a very special couple.

Happy Sunday, friends!ย ๐Ÿ’œ

watercolor wedding wreath

My plan was to create a simple and lovely wedding floral. I painted this pretty wreath last week and… my son and his fiancee loved it. yay! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m so excited and honored to be working on art for their big day. I was very touched that they wanted to include my art on their invitation.ย ๐Ÿ˜Šย Since the wedding is next fall, I am going to include more fall like colors in the final piece.

color mixing chart

I pulled out my color mixing chart to find some nice rich fall colors..

sample watercolor mixes

I mixed up burnt orange, burgundy, and other colors that might make some pretty roses.

practice watercolor roses and leaves

A few practice roses and different leaves using some of the sample colors. I still have more work to do but think I’m getting closer.

Hopefully soon I will pull out my favorite Saunders watercolor paper and put together a few more wreaths that they can choose from.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!
