Floral comes together with ink sketching

I have a joyful piece to share with you today. Another watercolor floral with ink sketching… my favorite way to create.

In my 9 x 12 inch sketchbook, I started by painting  flowers and leaves. My favorite blues and purples this time. I let the colors mix and mingle on the paper which is what I love about watercolor.

The overall piece needs balance and more interest but at this point that’s ok. The ink sketching to come will fill in space and wake things up.

 

9 x 12 inch  – Sweet Season

There is always a little fear when adding the sketching layer. I just tell myself that this piece is incomplete as is and round two (sketching detail) will take things to the next level.

What you don’t see is that I keep playing and sketching different types of leaves and flower patterns in my other sketchbooks. That type of play helps build my confidence and my sketching “muscle memory”. Then when I need it, I can pull out my favorites to add to a bigger piece like this one.

When it feels right and I have a window of free time, I pull out the painting, grab my pens and start adding some playful ink sketching and doodles.

Ink sketching makes it all better

Today I have some colorful leaves to share with you. This piece hit a little bump in the road during the first layer of painting. As the title suggests, ink sketching makes it all better… well, this time it did. 😊

I mixed different shades of red, orange, and pink. The painting was all pretty basic with some leaf shapes and stems.

The last touch was to add something in the upper right corner to balance things out.

 

As  I painted away I realized… uh oh, I just painted the leaves in the wrong direction. My plan was to paint a few more leaves in the right direction with a little darker color to see if that would fix it.

More paint wasn’t the solution I decided. I planned on adding ink sketching anyway and just hoped for the best. Now I had to wait for the painting to dry.

 

To keep things more interesting I used different shapes and sizes for the leaves. I let the watercolor act as a guide and let the sketching bring things into focus.

My previous painting issue was saved by the ink sketching. I outlined a stem with leaves in the right direction and the other leaves just became part of the background.

I was able to make a save here and just go with it. There are always choices to make with every painting. My best advice is to just keep practicing and having fun.

Feels like home – watercolor and ink

Something sweet to share with you today.

Hope your day is wonderful, friends! 💙😊

I just love to paint birds and flowers and was in the mood for something sweet. It started with a watercolor under painting.

 

Sorry about the quality of the photo, not great but it works.

I used a #6 round brush and started with the leaves. For the bird I built up the color with about 3 washes darkening each time. The flowers were last as I tried to balance things out.

At this point I was pretty happy with the painting but wanted more. So out came the pens… I was thoughtful about wanting to keep the softness of the piece which meant I needed to be careful with the amount of ink used.

 

I darkened the bird’s eye and added some light marks on the body and legs. Just a few small touches for the little guy and no outlining.

I tried to use some soft playful outlines on the flowers while using my regular bold outline on the leaves.

A little bit of this and that

I thought it would be fun to share a little bit of this and that with you today.

Playing in my sketchbook brings me joy.

This little sketchbook is 5 x 5 inches and just perfect for a quick ink sketch.

 

Little bird and flowers… These pages just make me smile.

In my sketchbook I can explore ideas and not worry about making mistakes. Sometimes the results are good and other times not so much. It gives me an opportunity to try different compositions and elements on a small scale.

 

A simple watercolor landscape…calm and soothing.

Just three colors used in this painting, Prussian Blue, Sap Green, and Green Gold.

 

Some pretty flowers in my garden. This photo was taken using my iPhone in portrait mode. Such lovely colors and interesting shapes. Oh happy day!

A little floral sketch with the addition of some warm colors for this one.

 

I love to paint first and then add a little sketching on top for detail and definition. Since this process requires waiting for the painting to dry before sketching, I usually have multiple projects going at the same time. 🙂

 

This last piece was a card that I made a while back with a little bird and flowers…a few things that bring me joy.

Flowering tree with ink doodles

I just love a flowering tree and today I have one to share with you. 🌼🌸

Happy Sunday, friends! 💚

It started with the simple idea of painting a tree… and so out came the watercolors.

 

A playful tree full of swirls became my under painting. I decided on a rainbow of colors for this one.

When I finished I set the painting aside for a while. I like to think about the sketching a little before diving in. That happens quite often.  😉

 

I started playing with different flower doodles and added with some leaves. I really like the contrast of the loud flowers on top with the quiet playful flowers falling to the ground.

Although this piece is really all about the flowers, I love the color and texture of the tree trunk.

Tiny Squares – watercolor and ink

I have another tiny squares project to share with you today. I wanted something simple and fun this week. These little squares were just what I needed.

I started with a couple rows of watercolor squares in light blue, gray, and brown.

No measuring, just playing and trying to paint a few rows of little squares.

To bump up the brown, I added a coffee wash on top of the light brown watercolor.

 

Just a simple sketch in each little square to finish things off.

I just love this type of project…joyful little squares. Maybe that should have been the title of my post.

Butterflies and Blooms

I’ve been thinking about butterflies lately and needing some happy, so here we go…

I filled a page in my sketchbook with a variety of butterfly doodles.

 

Then I moved on to watercolor and played for a while. I just love those blues and purples.

 

A larger painting of blooms and butterflies came together. The watercolor painting was first and then later ink sketching was added on top. The painting was a guide and inspiration for the botanical sketch. I really enjoy the watercolor and ink combination.

Floral Swirls watercolor and ink

I have a layered watercolor and ink painting to share today.

Happy Sunday, Happy Easter! 💚

For the first layer, I started by painting a number of circles in different colors.

The pastel colors kind of remind me of Easter eggs. 🐰🐣

 

The second layer is where it starts to get a little wild with the addition of  watercolor swirls and stripes. I decided to experiment a little more with this piece.

At this point it looks like a floral is starting to emerge.

 

Continuing with the floral theme, the final layer is a fun botanical sketch. I’m often surprised how fast the sketching layer goes. I believe this 11 x 15 inch sketch took about 30 to 45 minutes. As long as I don’t overthink things and just go with the flow, it usually comes together rather quickly.

Purple Posies – Watercolor Floral Sketch

I have some happy flowers to share with you. Hope they brighten your day.

I painted a simple floral base a few months ago.

I wanted to add some sketching but wasn’t ready.

It sat on my table for a few months. Life happens and so it waited for time and inspiration.  (sorry about the poor quality photos)…

 

Purple Posies – 11 x 15 inch

I finally pulled it back out last week and decided to jump in.

Using a Uniball 05 pen I tried to keep the sketching simple and fun.

A few notes on my process

Flowers – I give each flower a quick thought before sketching its final shape as I work my way around the painting. No overthinking, just keeping the flow going making decisions on the fly.

Leaves – Some leaves are defined, some hidden (tucked behind other elements), and others are added. Variety, size, and shape are always on my mind when I’m adding leaves and vines. They help fill in empty space and add balance where needed.

Play – Enjoy the process and have fun. There are no rules and no mistakes. We learn and grow from each piece.
