Abstract willow – 9 x 12 inch watercolor
I’ve been practicing and playing with color. I imagined a different result for this painting, something a little less abstract. Instead of trying to change where things were going, I just let it be.
I’m glad I did that, what a nice surprise. 💙💜

It all started with a sketch. I enjoy sitting down with my sketchbook and playing with floral designs.

I decided to work on a painting inspired by my floral sketch.
My first watercolor wash, a light layer of petals and leaves.
I continued on with a few more layers of color making sure each was dry before starting the next. The key is that each layer of color added gets a little darker.
Transparent petals and leaves completed.
The flowers are much larger than in the sketch but I like that. 🌸
I had so much fun with the first painting that later in the week I gave it another try.
This painting has a few more flowers and transparent leaves. I like how the overlapping leaves create movement and interest. Pink and green together is a favorite of mine so I stayed with that combination. This second painting has a playfulness that makes me happy.
It was fun using my sketch as a guide and letting each painting take me where it wanted to go. I hope you enjoyed seeing my work and that my flowers brighten your day.
