Tulips on my mind

I have more tulips to share with you today. I can’t seem to get enough of them lately.

Happy Mother’s Day, friends! ๐ŸŒท

I was excited when my tulips started coming up this Spring. A short time later though, I found that something had dined on all of the buds. My beautiful daffodils nearby survived so I was thankful for that.ย

I thought I would have to wait until next year to see the tulips I planted last fallย but luckily,ย  a few survived. Oh happy day!!

I snapped this pic last weekend.ย  This little beauty made my day…

What a gorgeous color!ย  That’s a #colorcrush for sure ๐Ÿ˜€

Tulips painted with coffee

I played with coffee again and painted a few tulips. After the painting dried, I sketched on top with a sepia micron pen.

Always fun playing with design ideas

and splashing around some paint.

Adding color on top of an ink sketch as I did with this one, is a challenge for me. I feel this internal struggle with where to start and how much color to add.

Tulip bunch watercolor

Tulip bunch – 9 x 12 inch Arches hot press watercolor paper

A loose watercolor painting with a large round brush. Direct paint to paper with no sketching first. I like this simple composition and was happy that I walked away before I had time to overwork it. Knowing when to stop is often the hardest part.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do what more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Summer Bliss doodle

A fun watercolor and ink doodle your way today.

Happy Thursday, friends! ๐Ÿ˜Š

floral ink and watercolor

Summer Bliss – 12 x 18 inch watercolor and ink

Another practice with big loose floral shapes and some fun ink doodles on top.

The watercolor base served as the inspiration for my ink sketching. My goal was to vary the size and shape of the ink doodles and to just have fun.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following along.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Watercolor and ink florals

I recently took a watercolor and ink class on SkillShare by Yasmina Creates. The botanical doodling class was so much fun, I couldn’t wait to give it a try.

Happy Sunday, friends!ย ๐Ÿ˜Š

I started with a loose watercolor underpainting. I painted many different flower and leaf shapes making sure to leave a lot of white space.

watercolor flowers underpainting

Materials used:

Canson watercolor paper 140# (a smooth paper surface)
Daniel Smith watercolors
Micron pens, various sizes

When my painting dried, I doodled flowers and leaves all over it with my micron pens.

I like this method of doodling on top of watercolor, it’s so simple and fun!

I feel free to let loose and play.

When it’s the other way around, doodle first then add watercolor, I think I tighten up. I have a harder time painting outside the lines. It feels better when I draw outside the paint.ย ๐Ÿ˜ย Maybe with more time and experience that will change.

I really like how this one turned out. The roses make me so happy. ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’—

Thursday – Doodle Swirls

A little doodle that I’ve been working on for a few weeks.

Happy Thursday, friends!

ink sketch - doodl swirls

Sometimes its hard to know when to stop.

I wanted to leave enough white space in the swirls and not over do it.

It feels right now, I finally put down the pen.ย  ๐Ÿ˜„

I hope you are inspired to create art and do what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

A few ink sketches for you today.

I always enjoy myself when I’m putting pen to paper. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I’ll bet you’re probably not surprised to see daisies in my sketchbook.

Little vines and flowers in the garden

I like to use mixed media paper and #micronpens for sketching? Do you have any favorite pens or paper that you use?

I hope you enjoyed this little walk through my sketchbook. Thank you for stopping by and following along.

Until next time, share a smile and have a great week!

It started with a sketch

It all started with a sketch. I enjoy sitting down with my sketchbook and playing with floral designs.

Happy Sunday friends! ๐Ÿ˜Š

flowers and vines ink sketch

I decided to work on a painting inspired by my floral sketch.

pink flowers and vines first wash

My first watercolor wash, a light layer of petals and leaves.

I continued on with a few more layers of color making sure each was dry before starting the next. The key is that each layer of color added gets a little darker.

pink flowers and vines watercolor

Transparent petals and leaves completed.

The flowers are much larger than in the sketch but I like that. ๐ŸŒธ

I had so much fun with the first painting that later in the week I gave it another try.

transparent pink watercolor flowers

This painting has a few more flowers and transparent leaves. I like how the overlapping leaves create movement and interest. Pink and green together is a favorite of mine so I stayed with that combination. This second painting has a playfulness that makes me happy.

It was fun using my sketch as a guide and letting each painting take me where it wanted to go. I hope you enjoyed seeing my work and that my flowers brighten your day.

Until next time, share a smile and have a wonderful week.

Happy Painting! ๐Ÿ’š
