It started with a sketch

It all started with a sketch. I enjoy sitting down with my sketchbook and playing with floral designs.

Happy Sunday friends! 😊

flowers and vines ink sketch

I decided to work on a painting inspired by my floral sketch.

pink flowers and vines first wash

My first watercolor wash, a light layer of petals and leaves.

I continued on with a few more layers of color making sure each was dry before starting the next. The key is that each layer of color added gets a little darker.

Transparent petals and leaves completed.

The flowers are much larger than in the sketch but I like that. 🌸

I had so much fun with the first painting that later in the week I gave it another try.

transparent pink watercolor flowers

This painting has a few more flowers and transparent leaves. I like how the overlapping leaves create movement and interest. Pink and green together is a favorite of mine so I stayed with that combination. This second painting has a playfulness that makes me happy.

It was fun using my sketch as a guide and letting each painting take me where it wanted to go. I hope you enjoyed seeing my work and that my flowers brighten your day.

Until next time, share a smile and have a wonderful week.

Happy Painting! 💚

Inktober sketching

Inktober is a drawing challenge started by Mr. Jake Parker where artists from all over the world take part in working on an ink drawing each day for the month of October. I am participating this year by sketching what I love when time allows.

Hope you enjoy my little sketches this week.

Happy Thursday!  😊

Poppy ink sketch

6 x 9 inch – Poppy flower

I’ve been using fine tip pens and trying to keep a light touch when sketching flower petals. I think it is starting to get a little better.

Floral for inktober

6 x 9 inch Flowers and vines

Sunflower ink sketch

9 x 12 inch Sunflower

A happy little flower inspired by a sunflower in my garden. 🌻

Ink tree sketch

9 x 12 inch  – Standing tall

Working on the leaves in this sketch was easier and more fun once I started to doodle and let go. I tried to be careful to leave enough white space and develop some areas more than others.

Birdie in a cup ink sketch

9 x 12 inch – Little birdie in a tea cup

All of my ink sketches are on mix media paper using Micron pens of various sizes. I like mix media paper because it is smooth and has a great surface for ink sketching. The other nice thing is that it can handle a little watercolor if I choose to add some color.

I hope you enjoy seeing my art and are inspired to do what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following along. Until next time, share a smile and spread kindness all around. 💗

I’ve been waiting…

I’ve been waiting for the Cosmos that I planted from seed to bloom. This week, it finally happened. I was pretty excited when I looked outside to see this beauty.

Happy Thursday! 🙂

She quickly became my painting inspiration for the week. ❤

Those little joyful petals just make me smile

and that yummy color just sings.

Naming artwork

A little flower practice using a 1/2 inch Flat angle brush.

Happy little petals your way today. 🙂

Baby blue flowers

I’ve been trying to come up with more thoughtful names for my artwork. I am finding that naming artwork is challenging. This small 6 x 9 inch piece I named, Baby Blues.

I wonder what the best approach is when naming artwork.

Maybe asking a few questions would be helpful before selecting a name…

  • What do I see?  (this is my usual method, somewhat descriptive)
  • What do I feel when I look at this piece?
  • What did I feel when I created this piece?
  • Does this piece bring back a special memory?
  • Does this piece have a special meaning?

Then again, am I just overthinking the process?  Is it best to just go with your gut (or what comes to mind right away)?

Do you have a method that works well for you? I would love to hear how you choose a name.

Thank you for stopping by and following along. I hope you are inspired to create art and do what you love.

Until next time, be the light and shine on! ❤

Floral Sketching

A little ink sketching today. Having fun with flowers and vines.

Happy Sunday!

Since I started doodling a while back, I stopped worrying about making mistakes while sketching and just going with it. I think that has really helped me loosen up and sketch freely. I also try to keep in mind that not every sketch is going to work out and that is part of learning and growing.

I surprised myself with these ink florals. I just love how they turned out.  I catch myself looking at them and saying, wow I did that! 🙂

Floral ink sketch

July Floral – 9 x 12 inch Canson Mix Media sketch book

For each of the flowers I started in the center and worked my way out. After dropping the flowers in place, I added the vines and leaves. I used a .03 Micron pen for the sketch and a .005 for the detail.

Blooms and Vines sketch

Another quick floral sketch just before adding detail.

I’ve been trying to add enough detail without going overboard. If I let myself go I will add too much and it will look a bit harsh.
