Soft flowers with ink detail

I have a sweet little floral to share with you today.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’š

watercolor floral base painting

I started out painting some pretty watercolor flowers and layered in some leaves and buds.

Soft pink and yellow petals combined with green gold leaves make up this palette today. I just love the layered petals and peekaboo flowers.

Adding ink sketching came next.

Outlining the petals and adding some detail in the center always wakes up my flowers. Some ink leaves and vines were added to balance things out and add some playfulness to the painting.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

In my sketchbook today

I have another round of sketching to share with you today. Can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on.

Hope you have a wonderful day friends! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’™

Pretty Posies ink sketch

I’m sure it’s no surprise to find there are flowers in my sketchbook. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pretty posies this time. I used purple and blue micron pens to create a playful pattern.

I like to pull out my sketchbook in the evening. Sometimes I start with plan and other times I just start with a doodle and go from there. This time a few pretty posies happened and I just continued on.

Doodles and flowers sketch

A lively botanical sketch. I just love how this one turned out.

My process is to start with one flower and then I just keep filling in with more flowers, leaves, and buds. I try to balance out the piece as I go. I stay away from too many details because I like this simple floral style.

In my sketchbook I don’t worry about making mistakes. It’s a place to try out different shapes and combinations. I can just let go with my pen and my imagination. Over time with lots of practice I’ve built up muscle memory and sketching confidence.

Dahlia Punch ink sketch

Another quick evening floral. I like adding a few patterns here and there for more fun.

Sketching ink pines

I decided to try sketching pines in a different style. I need to work on this style more but it was fun to watch the branches come to life when adding some shading and darker values.

I hope you enjoy seeing my work and following along. Sometimes I have a hard time finding my voice and putting together a post. I’m not a writer, I’m just an artist sharing what I love. I hope that you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Purple Posies – Watercolor Floral Sketch

I have some happy flowers to share with you. Hope they brighten your day.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’œ

I painted a simple floral base a few months ago.

watercolor floral under painting

I wanted to add some sketching but wasn’t ready.

It sat on my table for a few months. Life happens and so it waited for time and inspiration.ย  (sorry about the poor quality photos)…

Purple Posies – 11 x 15 inch

I finally pulled it back out last week and decided to jump in.

Using a Uniball 05 pen I tried to keep the sketching simple and fun.

A few notes on my process

Flowers – I give each flower a quick thought before sketching its final shape as I work my way around the painting. No overthinking, just keeping the flow going making decisions on the fly.

Leaves – Some leaves are defined, some hidden (tucked behind other elements), and others are added. Variety, size, and shape are always on my mind when I’m adding leaves and vines. They help fill in empty space and add balance where needed.

Play – Enjoy the process and have fun. There are no rules and no mistakes. We learn and grow from each piece.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Painting Loose Poppies

I don’t think I will ever get tired of painting poppies. I hope you don’t get tired of seeing my paintings and creative adventures.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’šย ๐Ÿ˜€

I watched another Peggy Dean Skillshare class recently and one of the projects was loose abstract poppies. I was very inspired by the class and decided to give her technique a try.ย

If you are interested in checking out the class you can find it here,ย Autumn watercolors.

soft loose poppies watercolor

My first attempt using colors similar to Peggy’s demo painting.

Simple shapes adding a lot of color on the bottom and then softening the top petal edges with clean water. I love how that worked out.

Watercolor Tip:ย  Adding a green stem while the flower is still a little wet creates a nice bloom of color at the base of the flower. When the stem bleeds into the color of the flower it always looks natural and delicate.

My next painting with fewer flowers and different colors. ๐ŸŒธ

I think this one is my favorite, but I do love the soft distant pink poppies in the first painting as well. It’s all about practice and having fun.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Watercolor floral banner

I have some watercolor florals to share with you today.

Hope your day is wonderful, friends! ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ˜Š

floral banner watercolor under painting

I decided to paint a floral banner and started out with a loose under painting.

Soft colors and simple leaf shapes make me very happy.

A little ink sketching was added next. I love that the ink brightens up the petals and leaves. It brings everything into focus.

There are so many options with ink sketching. I like to simply outline some ofย  the shapes that I see and also build up the piece by sketching new elements.

purple patty flowers - watercolor and ink sketch

Next up, I painted a “Patty” flower in the upper corner of my sketchbook.ย I call it a “Patty” flower because it’s one of my go to flowers. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love the simple lines and this pretty purple color. ๐Ÿ’œ

Pretty purple watercolor mix:
