Blue Roses watercolor

I’ve been having fun playing with color.

Hope your day is wonderful, friends! 💙

It’s always fun to experiment and play. No rules, just have fun!

Here I used my favorite Prussian Blue and Undersea Green. I stacked the Roses and added just a few small leaves to balance things out.

I hope you are inspired to create art and have fun. Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Here come the roses again…

This week I was back to painting roses again with coffee and watercolor. It’s always fun to look back at previous work so I included some roses from the past here as well.

Happy Sunday, friends!  💚

Coffee painting - Roses

I started with a center rose and then worked my way around. I love to paint with espresso powder for baking. Adding a few drops of water to a little powder and you have a beautiful “coffee” paint ready to go. I used a round #6 brush here. There is so much you can do with a round brush. I have a number of different sizes, just love them.

Painting Tip: Keep an eye on your brushes. Over time the tip of a round brush will wear down. I just noticed that I have a few brushes that I need to replace.

Colorful watercolor roses

This time a little more color with some bright watercolor roses. This style is a bit more modern botanical…I like that.

Roses at Longwood Gardens watercolor

and now looking back to a playful painting of roses from last year…  I really love the colors and the movement in this one.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Having art in my life is such a blessing. Painting and sketching makes me happy and I am thankful that I can share my journey with you.

I will be taking a blogging break for a few weeks. I am busy getting ready for a bridal shower that I’m hosting later this summer. I will still be around and may post a few things on Instagram.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Pink and Gray Floral Doodle

I have a happy pink and gray doodle sketch to share today.

Happy Sunday, friends! 🌸

Pink and Gray watercolor under painting

I started out with a soft watercolor under painting. Multiple layers of pink and gray creating a little floral pattern.

I set my painting aside and thought about it a while. Before adding ink sketching I like to wait until I have a general plan and some quiet time.

About a week later I pulled out my pens and had some fun.

7 x 10 inch Pink and Gray Floral Swirls

I like how the swirls were easily transformed into roses with some curved lines. The playful leaves really worked out well and kind of guide your eyes upward. 😀

It always feels good when things come together at the end. I love how the ink sketching wakes up the painting and brings on the happy. 💗

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Coffee painting again

When I started painting and playing with coffee I didn’t realize how much fun it was going to be. I have a few more coffee paintings to share today.

Happy Sunday, friends! 💚

Coffee Birdie painting

I sketched a little bird in pencil and then started painting with coffee. I tried not to overcomplicate the feathers and made sure to leave some white spots here and there. I love this little guy, so soft and sweet…

Coffee Palette

Espresso powder for baking works well for me.

Simply adding a little water to a small amount of powder and then you have a nice coffee mix. The espresso has been on my palette for a while, so this time I just sprayed a mist of water on it to rewet it.

Coffee Roses painting

I’ve been working on roses and decided to paint a few more with coffee. I used two round #6 brushes for this painting.  One brush for color and the other for clean water. The second clean brush was handy for extra blending or lifting of color.

Roses:
I started with the center rose on bottom, then added a rose on each side.
It needed more, so I continued and stacked a few more smaller roses on top.

Leaves:
I started with some large leaf shapes and tried to balance things out on each side of my roses. I still wanted more, so for a little variety and movement I added some smaller leaves on the outer edges.

I hope you enjoy seeing my art and are inspired to do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and have fun!

A special watercolor wreath

I’ve been working on a wedding invitation for a very special couple.

Happy Sunday, friends! 💜

watercolor wedding wreath

My plan was to create a simple and lovely wedding floral. I painted this pretty wreath last week and… my son and his fiancee loved it. yay! 😀

I’m so excited and honored to be working on art for their big day. I was very touched that they wanted to include my art on their invitation. 😊 Since the wedding is next fall, I am going to include more fall like colors in the final piece.

color mixing chart

I pulled out my color mixing chart to find some nice rich fall colors..

sample watercolor mixes

I mixed up burnt orange, burgundy, and other colors that might make some pretty roses.

practice watercolor roses and leaves

A few practice roses and different leaves using some of the sample colors. I still have more work to do but think I’m getting closer.

Hopefully soon I will pull out my favorite Saunders watercolor paper and put together a few more wreaths that they can choose from.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!

Purple bouquet watercolor and ink

I have a watercolor and ink floral to share with you today.

Happy Thursday, friends! 💜

rose bouquet watercolor under painting

Roses are purple – 11 x 15 Canson watercolor paper

A few weeks ago I painted this watercolor bouquet.

I used my favorite large round #14 and small liner brush on this piece. Some pretty purple and blue flowers I thought would be nice in this painting.

Sometimes I am ready to start right away with ink sketching but that wasn’t the case this time. I waited until I had some quiet time and a basic plan for the sketch.purple roses bouquet watercolor and ink painting

I used a few different waterproof pens with different size tips (05, 01, 005) for this sketch. It’s nice to vary the line weight. Sometimes a thicker line is needed and other times a delicate thin line is ideal. I keep my pens by my side and switch them up as I go.

For this type of sketching, I like to outline some things and ignore others. I think that keeps it more lively and often the things I ignore stay active in the background.

watercolor painting setup

This is view of my watercolor setup. It’s a little messy but I wanted to show you my arrangement. I use a mix of Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith watercolors.

The mixing area is easily cleaned with a wet issue. It looks like I need to take care of that before my next painting. 😉

I will be taking a little blogging break but will be back in a week or so.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

watercolor painting - roses

12 x 18 inch –  Special Roses

A quick watercolor practice using a large round brush to splash around some paint.

I wasn’t sure about this piece after I finished it but I found myself going back to it days later. One of those times where I liked my painting better when looking at it with fresh eyes.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following me on this creative journey.

Until next time, share a smile and shine on!
