Spring tulips watercolor painting

Spring is here and I am looking forward to the arrival of all of the beautiful tulips.

I tried something new last fall and planted a bunch of bulbs in large flower pots. They stayed in my shed over the winter and I brought them out last month. To my delight they are coming up now and it looks like I will have a bunch to enjoy. I can’t wait!

Speaking of tulips, I have a few in progress shots of a recent painting to share.

Starting out I added some simple tulip shapes with a just a few brush stokes for each. A large round brush worked nicely for this.

Adding some leaves and additional flowers here. Now the painting is starting to come together as the layering continues.

I arrived at this final composition. I really like the balance and movement as well as the pretty tulips.

Keeping it simple and fun was what this was all about. I hope you are inspired to create art and do something you love.

Dreamy Watercolor Poppies

Today I have a watercolor floral to share with you.

I’ve had a busy start to Summer but was able to do a little painting recently.

I love the peachy pinks and the soft delicate petals. The shape and movement of the leaves gently guide your eyes upward. I’m very happy with how this turned out.

My big news is that I’m going to be a grandma this summer! I am so excited and blessed. I can’t wait to meet my sweet grandson and love him up. ❤️

Soothing Blue Watercolors

Today I have selected some of my watercolor paintings in soothing blues to share with you.

This loose floral with gray blue flowers is very calming.
It’s just simple and delicate. I really like that.

Playing with the gray blue here with a single flower. I love the lost edges and the pale petals in back.

A little abstract landscape with some soothing blues in the distance. I love the bright flowers in the foreground. I’m always inspired by o_aquarelles on Instagram. The ease with which she paints beautiful landscapes always makes me want to pick up my brush and paint away!

Limited palette leaves. Playing with a plastic card, brush, and watercolor pencil. The little lines with pencil add a touch of detail that wakes up this painting.

As I was putting together this post I was looking back through some recent paintings. The single flower and landscape jumped out at me. I’m always amazed at how much more I appreciate some of my paintings later on. As for the landscape above, I’m loving it now.

Inktober Sketching 2022

Today I have a few ink sketches to share with you. My sketching time has been limited this month but I was able to find a little time to play in my sketchbook.

A little botanical sketch using my Pentel pocket brush pen. It’s been a very long time since I’ve used this pen and I’m not sure why. I love this pen!

This sketch was done a little before October. I was really exploring what I could do with the long lost brush pen. 😊 I like that you can make delicate marks and fine lines as well as large bold stokes using this pen.

Inspired by Nature

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite photos. I love the beautiful colors and patterns found in nature.

I hope you enjoy. 💚

The patterns here are so amazing. It looks like leaves painted on leaves. I took this photo a number of years ago and still remember my excitement when I walked past these beautiful leaves.

A look into the center of this plant and you can see tiny ribbons unfolding in all directions.

Lily of the Valley in my garden always delights me every year. I love the delicate white bells against the larger green leaves that seem to swirl about on the page.

Another beauty taken a few years ago. Oh how I love these colors!

This landscape photo was taken from the car last week. I looked out to see this gorgeous sky and was able to quickly take a few photos with my phone before we drove by.

Lovely Summer Flowers

Today I have a some summer flowers to share with you. All photos were taken with my iPhone. I love this time of year and always look forward to these pretty views in my yard.

Right outside my door in the evening. This just makes my heart sing!

Oh that golden yellow color. 💛

Hello beautiful!

I was so excited when these pink beauties bloomed. I’m so glad I was able to enjoy them a few days and got a few nice photos when I did. I expected them to be around a while with all those buds waiting to open.

Unfortunately we had some visitors stop by and eat all of the pink lilies. Looks like I’m going to have to move them closer to the house. I think that will keep them safer from deer and other critters.

Sunny Floral painting

I have a sunny floral to share with you today. These little yellow flowers make me so happy. I hope you enjoy them too. 💛

I had some fun playing in my sketchbook and started with a light pencil sketch. I used my Tombow dual tip brush pens for some bright color.

The small tip of the pen worked well to draw the lavender. I used dark purple and blue to sketch the little petals. Then I used a damp brush with clean water to wet and blend the lavender a little in some areas.

The yellow flowers were a combination of different shades of yellow, light gold, and pale orange. I tried to keep it all very simple here just blending on the page with a little clean water.

When the flowers were dry, I used a blue brush pen to make a bunch of very tiny lines and dots in the center of the flowers. I think yellow always looks so pretty next to blue and purple.

Calming leaves in my sketchbook

Today I have a few pages in my little watercolor sketchbook to share with you.

I’ve been painting leaves using a plastic card and brush. I just can’t seem to get enough of this. 💙

I like simplifying my color choices. Here I used just three colors.

I push paint around with the plastic card and use the watercolor brush to wet the paper and smooth out any areas that need it. A damp brush helps encourage the paint to move around a bit.

I am so in love with these colors. I decided to let the paint to bleed out a little on opposite corners. It needed a little something extra and that worked well.

Saving space for the focal point

My painting started out as simple vines and buds.

I left space for more flowers to be added later. I should have taken more photos but I’m glad I have this one to share.

I strengthened the buds with darker color and loose shapes. I love how the pretty purple flowers and leaves at the bottom guide your eye up into the painting.

There was enough space for a large flower at the top. It worked out well and became the focal point that this painting needed. The center of the flower turned out really nice. The little bit of dark color that bled into the petals from the center really makes my heart sing. The best part was that I didn’t overwork it. Yay!

It’s important to remember that showing up and having fun really makes a difference. Some paintings will work out better than others. While I may showcase some of my favorite paintings here, I have many that aren’t successful. I do my best to keep in mind that each painting is a step forward and an opportunity to learn and grow.
