Water Lily practice continues on…

I’ve tried many times to paint water lilies on the pond. I alway find painting them to be very challenging. Today I have a few practice pieces to share with you.

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’œ

water lily watercolor painting

A very loose attempt with this one. It has a nice softness and calm feeling.

It could probably benefit from another dark wash around the base of each flower.

Having had a few unsuccessful water lily paintings behind me, I decided to move on and leave this one as is. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A bolder attempt this time. It took a number of washes with various dark colors to achieve this result.ย It feels like water to me and that my flowers are floating on top. Yay! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I will continue to practice and keep on trying to paint water lilies. I hope you are inspired to play, create art, and have fun.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Lavender in the garden

I planted some lavender in the garden this week. Oh my, the scent was just divine. Today I have a lavender inspired painting to share with you.

Happy Thursday, friends!ย ๐Ÿ’œ

lavender watercolor painting first round

For this painting I used my travel watercolors. Things were looking pretty good but I realized it needed more color after looking at the photo above.

It’s important to know when to stop painting but also when it’s time to go back in.

I bumped up the purple and greens and darkened the colors a little.

Ahh, yes much better. ๐Ÿ˜€

Additional leaves were also added with my liner brush. Some brush strokes were made by dragging the side of the brush across the paper.ย  Others were made with a light touch moving the tip of the brush on the page. It’s a simple thing but it really adds movement and some nice variation.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!

Little birdies this week

I have a couple watercolor birdies to share with you today.ย  These little cuties were simple and fun. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Happy Sunday, friends! ๐Ÿ’š

birdie watercolor under painting

A little birdie under painting, wet on wet dropping in different colors. I didn’t sketch anything first, just an oval shape for my bird and a flat oval for the top of the pot below him.

fun little watercolor birdie

I added some ink detail with a few different colored micron pens. Then I sprinkled some joyful feathers, hearts, and flowers all over.

I wanted my second bird to be looking up and have a different type of eye. Here I was playing around trying to find a cute shape that I could easily duplicate. I also wanted a few soft feathers and so I worked on that a little bit too.

birdie on a branch watercolor

This little sweetie started off in the same way as the first bird. I decided to change up the colors on this one and to have him surrounded by flowers on a branch.

I tried to keep it soft and so I only added small ink touches. I like how the bird kind of blends into the tree. I kept the detail to a minimum so that it would be a little dreamy.

I hope you are inspired to create art and do more of what you love. Thank you for stopping by and following me on this creative journey.

Until next time, share a smile and stay excellent!
